Howard Park was founded in 1986 in Margaret River by John Wade, who named the business after his father. John worked as a winemaker at Plantagenet Wines in Mount Barker and was regarded as one of the most experienced winemakers in Western Australia. In 1993 he went into business with the Burch family, who just a few years previously had bought a large property in Margaret River, which had been deemed very suitable for the growing of Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. The first vintage of Howard Park was released in 1994, and since then, the winery has gone to win many accolades, in particular for its Abercrombie Cabernet Sauvignon. Howard Park is a part of Burch Family Wines, headed by Jeff and Amy Burch, who operate several labels within Western Australia, as well as one based in Burgundy, France. Howard Park fruit is sourced from four vineyards, two within Margaret River, and two within Mount Barker.
Howard Park makes wines for five different ranges, suiting many budgets. The Jeté label offers sparkling wines, made in the méthode champenoise, from fruit sourced in the cool-climate region of Great Southern. The Distinguished Sites wines showcase the distinctive personalities of Howard Park’s best Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz vineyards, from two contrasting regions. The Heritage range offers a selection of Chardonnays, Rieslings and Sauvignon Blancs from different vineyards, including the Museum Release Riesling, aged for several years before its release. Last, but certainly not least, are the Icons, such as the A.S.W Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz (named after Amy’s father and mother, who share the same initials), and the Abercrombie Cabernet Sauvignon, consistently rated as one of the best Cabernets in Australia.
