“Mahi” is a word that means ‘our work, our craft’ and when established in 2001 was a dream realised for Brian and Nicola Bicknell. Based in Marlborough, ‘Mahi’ has become synonymous with wines that truly express their site and individuality. In 1996, when Brian had returned to New Zealand from working abroad for 15 years, he noticed that a lot of Marlborough wines were being made as regional blends. He felt this method to winemaking was putting the products at a disadvantage and endeavoured to showcase wines that promoted different vineyard sites and showcased Marlborough’s true depth and complexity.
Since their first vintage, the Mahi team have grown into a family that is dedicated to looking after the land. ‘Mahi’ strive to make wines that are as natural as possible, and with as little intervention as possible too. Brian has always brought a ‘hands off’ approach to winemaking. Over the years ‘Mahi’ has acquired seven vineyards and are now making wines that showcase the best of the different sites.
Currently having five varietals in their portfolio, each of the sites produce different expressions from the same grapes. Our favourite is the ‘Mahi Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc’ and the ‘Mahi Marlborough Pinot Noir’.
