‘Main Divide’ is a North Canterbury winery that adopted its name from the impressive Southern Alps mountain range which forms the entire backbone of the South Island of New Zealand. This notion also forms the backbone of the ‘Main Divide’ philosophy as being a winery that wants to produce unspoilt, awe-inspiring, fresh wines that embody the climate and surrounding site.
‘Main Divide’ wines are produced by the Donaldson family at Pegasus Bay Vineyards in the Waipara Valley in North Canterbury. The Donaldson Family have been involved in the wine industry in North Canterbury since the 1970’s and are deeply dedicated to producing wines that truly reflect their individual sites they’re sourced from. A selection of North Canterbury vineyards are chosen because of their unique terroir and quality of grapes. Natural methods are used in their winemaking process as they believe in as little intervention as possible through all stages. Sustainable viticultural management, organic methods and low crop yields are all part of this process.
‘Main Divide’ wants to produce wines that are individual and harmonious. We believe they have done this across the board with their range of Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Chardonnay. Their Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris happen to be house favourites here at Specialist Cellars. Their reds will blow you away in the form of their ‘Merlot Cabernet Red Blend’ and Pinot Noir. ‘Main Divide’ aspire to capture the unique flavours of the vineyards in their wine and they receive a 10/10 from us there.
