Riposte was founded in 2006 by Tim Knappstein, whose family has been involved in the Australian wine industry since 1895. He began working for the Stanley Wine Company in 1966, having graduated from Roseworthy College in Adelaide. After the company was sold in 1971, Tim planted his own vineyards in the Clare Valley and in 1976 created his own brand, Tim Knappstein Wines. Tim planted vines in the Adelaide Hills in 1981 selling all his Clare Valley vineyards 14 years later. The Adelaide Hills vineyards have since been sold, and Tim works with growers in the region to source fruit for his ‘Riposte’ label. In order to eliminate the need to build his own expensive winery, Tim makes his wines at Wicks Estate. Tim helped to establish Wicks Estate with one of his friends in 2004, making Tim a ‘virtual winemaker’ - a winemaker without his own winery, though the arrangement seems to suit him just fine. Riposte is a family-run business, with Tim’s wife Dale as General Manager, and son Nick as Brand Manager/winemaker. Riposte aims to make ‘outstanding cool-climate boutique wines at affordable prices’, with many of those wines receiving excellent reviews from critics. All the wines are named after types of swords, a nod to the challenges that life has dealt him over the years; ‘riposte’ itself is a fencing term, describing a quick return thrust of the sword.
A range of wines are available, including: ‘The Scimitar Riesling’, revealing intense lemon and lime aromas and flinty, minerally finish, with excellent acidity; and The ‘Sabre Pinot Noir’, with rose and red fruit on the nose and palate, and a lingering finish. For more information on Riposte and their wines, head to their website.
