Vignerons Schmölzer & Brown was established by partners Tessa Brown, winemaker and Jeremy Schmölzer, architect. The duo planted their first vineyard, named ‘Thorley’ which means ‘thorn clearing’, in 2014 in a high-altitude spot in the Beechworth GI, King Valley. They have smaller parcels of growing vines in the Alpine Valleys and across the road in the Brunnen Vineyard, their friendly neighbours!
Both Tessa and Jeremy are very hands-on winemakers, spending far more time in the fields than in the office. Wherever they can, and as the vineyard matures, they are working to continually increase their organic methods and inputs. Their 2017 vintage was the first to be made with organically-grown grapes.
Their wines are all made with hand-picked fruit, ferment with only indigenous yeast, they don’t fine and only their white wines are filtered. The only malolactic fermentation VS&B wines may go through is spontaneous, not architected.
Teresa and Jeremy took inspiration from the French fashion movement Pret-a-Porter, meaning ready to wear, when creating their Prêt-à-wines series. These wines are exactly as they’ve been named for - early, easy-drinking!
