Back in 1988 the Glover family planted grapes in the Marlborough region in the family farm that relied on dairy products made from their cows’ milk. It’s not until later in 2007 that Ben Glover, eldest son, launched Zephyr - single vineyard wines from this family farm.
The name Zephyr means ‘gentle breeze’ and comes from the wind in Marlborough’s Dillon’s point alongside Marlborough’s Opawa River.
From paddock to vineyard, Zephyr is one of NZ’s most renowned wineries. Ben has been making wine for decades - elegant, expansive, varied and representative of the fertile, north-facing vines of the Zephyr site.
Only 3km from the high tide line and 10m above sea level, some years the flavour profile of Zephyr wines can tend more towards the umami / salty than others. Given its proximity to the Opawa River the soil structure is NZ’s famous Kaiapoi silt loam, incredibly fertile and sheltered from the worst of the ferocious southerlies that whistle through the region fairly regularly.
Zephyr wines include Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc, all delivered with Ben’s expressive, elegant style.
In 2019, Ben has collaborated with our very own Melanie Brown to produce New Press Wines, Mel’s first collection from her planned New Press Wine series. The wines she and Ben have created to represent the most faithful expression of NZ’s terroirs are Pinot Noir, Pinot Rose and the always classic Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.
