Craven Wines is the result of a chance meeting whilst working vintage in California. Jeanine and Mick then travelled the world, working in as many different regions as possible, before returning to Jeanine's home in Stellenbosch to establish their own label.

“We both feel Stellenbosch has such an amazing array of sites and terroir, and that it is perfect for what we want to do. Which is make site-specific, honest wines. Let the grapes do the talking....” (Jeanine and Mick Craven)

Winemaking at Craven is as hands-off as possible, whilst showing incredible attention to detail. All fermentations are started with indiginous yeast, and wines are bottled unfined, following natural stabilisation. Minimal SO2 is added at bottling.

They have planted three vineyards around Stellenbosch. Faure Vineyards was planted in 1996 with Pinot Noir and Syrah grown. The vines are situated in proximity to the ocean which gives a consistent sea breeze cooling off during the growing season. Newlands vineyard was planted in 2005 and is perfectly suited to early ripening Pinot Gris.

Region

Stellenbosch

Stellenbosch’s treasures include the finest of Cape Dutch architecture supporting the wine making history that started around the 17th century. Surrounded by mountains, the soils in which are planted the vines are well-drained. The rainfall also helps in creating a cooler climate for the vines. South Africa is known for its red blends and Stellenbosch is the concrete demonstration of transforming grape variety into the finest qualitative wines.

Stellenbosch wine district comprises several smaller viticultural sub-area including Banghoek, Bottelary, Devon Valley, Jonkershoek Valley, Papegaaiberg, Polkadraai Hills and Simonsberg-Stellenbosch.

Stellenbosch also known as the 'town of oaks', encourages viticultural practices. It welcomes the educational and research centre of the winelands and Nietvoorbij Institute of Viticulture and Oenology. Stellenbosch University is also the only university in South Africa that offers a degree in viticulture and oenology. Now home to more than 200 producers and wineries, Stellenbosch is expanding rapidly and its production capacity is recognised around the world.
