Black Estate is a family owned and organic producer in Waipara, North Canterbury. The family owns three north-facing hillside vineyards with clay and a diverse range of limestone soils. Black Estate wish to capture the truest expression of each site's character in the bottle so to make wine that is truly original and memorable.
Nicholas' winemaking is gentle and guiding. His wines are inoculated with yeast collected from the vineyard specific to the fruit - so to get a closer and real expression of the season and the vineyard. The wines are not fined and the Pinot Noirs and Cabernet Franc are not filtered. Minimal inputs are used with the winemaking.
The family purchased the Black Estate Home vineyard in 2007 from its founder Russell Black (planted in 1994). All vineyards are managed organically and with biodynamics and Black Estate is now in conversion with Bio Gro. Visit the Black Estate Website.
