Felton Road 2019 Vintage

‘2019 is potentially our best ever vintage’

Blair Walter

Well, if the past vintages are anything to go by, then damn we are EXCITED.

We are very lucky to be stocking some of the amazing wines that have come out of the 2019 vintage. Nigel Greening, aka Felton Road custodian, has provided some words of how they have experienced the changes over these past couple of months:

‘With so much uncertainty in the world today and the daunting prospects that lay ahead, it seems somewhat trivial to be offering you our latest rendition of Block wines and other new releases from the spectacular 2019 vintage.’

‘In appreciation for the support we have enjoyed over the years, we will be holding all the 2019 prices unchanged, despite the smaller volumes and extraordinary quality.’

‘We trust you enjoy these 2019’s, stay safe and well, we really do long to see you all soon to share a glass.

Cheers and Kia Kaha‘

Biodynamic Kings

Felton Road remain focused on creating biodynamic wines in all their vineyards. They plant cover crops and wild flowers within the vineyard itself and behind the vines are home to a herd of goats.

The object of Biodynamics is to maximise the living energy within this system in order to make it self-sustaining and of the highest quality. In order to maximise the living energy within our soils, biodynamic composts are made which form the foundation of this growing regime.

Since 2002 all vineyards have been managed organically and biodynamically, and in 2010 all four vineyards were awarded full Demeter certification. Pruning is carried out to leave desired bud numbers thus ensuring moderate controllable yields and to create an even, light penetrable canopy.

Irrigation is usually necessary during the later dry summer months. Soil moisture levels are carefully monitored and water is applied only when necessary to maintain appropriate soil moisture levels. All grapes are carefully hand picked, keeping separate any quality differences within blocks due to clones, rootstocks and viticultural trials.

Central Otago legends

Felton Road is situated on warm, north facing slopes of glacial loess soils in Bannockburn, in the heart of Central Otago. The modern gravity fed winery receives 100% estate grown fruit from its three vineyards that are all farmed biodynamically and are fully certified by Demeter.

Minimal intervention in the winemaking with such practices as wild yeast, no fining or filtration, allow the unique vineyard characters to further express their considerable personality. Since the first vintage in 1997, Felton Road has acquired a formidable worldwide reputation.

The Felton Road winery began in 1991 and established itself as something of an institution in recent years with their Pinot Noirs, Chardonnays and Rieslings – all biodynamic of course – and have been picking up steam in popularity, quickly gaining a reputation as one of New Zealand’s premium wineries.
