WHITE WINE BEYOND NEW ZEALAND SAVVY
The ever trivial topic of White Wine beyond Sauvignon Blanc in New Zealand… New Zealand has become synonymous with Sauvignon Blanc over the last decade, and whilst managing to retain our premium reputation, most are unaware of the resounding success that New Zealand conveys with the exploration of ‘other’ varietals. Testament to a wine industry built and developed with new world energy and flair, the wines we’re celebrating right now as Summer draws to an end, are a collection we believe convey New Zealand’s premium winemaking ability. I’m sure you’ll agree, this is an incredibly exciting time for New Zealand, particularly in our white wine sphere.
We celebrate and honour our rock star, Sauvignon Blanc – we always will as its responsible for 60% of New Zealand vineyard plantings! However, we’re excited to announce our deep love and connection to what we believe should be some white varietals worth championing too. We get over excited about these wines, so much so, we’re regularly seen quaffing a bottle of Te Awa Albariño at our Brixton Wine Bar and Store!
WHY GET TO KNOW THE “OTHER” WINES ON NEW ZEALAND?
What has made these wines successful? The range in climate, weather systems and soils. The ‘terror’ combined with careful site selection for each of the varietals, vine age and innovative winemaking. The beauty of New Zealand is never one to be underestimated, and no more so when it comes to our dynamic wine growing regions, so whether you are searching for a Gisborne Albariño or a Nelson Grüner Veltliner – below we’re showcasing what shall only be referred to as an enthralling, compelling and highly drinkable selection of wines that should support Sauvignon on a global stage… Enjoy!
THE STYLE & SWAGGER
Big & Bold
Millton, Chenin Blanc Te Arai Vineyard 2016
Fresh lime zest, fragrant gardenias, taut & vibrant. Fine wool, bush honey, cumquat, ripe bouche pear & a tingling after taste. SO many flavours, so much texture and SO much complexity. A wonderful example of New World Chenin Blanc
PURE & FRUITY
Esk Valley, Verdelho, 2017
This is a full bodied wine with a pure fresh finish. Peach, musk and mandarin & a grapefruit like acidity. A crowd pleaser – let’s take a moment to honour the sheer drinkability this wine will provide you!
CAPTIVATING
Trinity Hill, Marsanne/Viognier 2016
Pungent citrus blossom, fresh apricot & jasmine. Rich, full & silky texture is the endearing feature. If this wine doesn’t seduce you, we certainly don’t know what will – a lovely example of two Rhône varietals, Marsanne giving body and weight, whilst Viognier providing delicate lifted edge…. Whoar….
LEAN & MEAN
Te Awa, Albariño 2017
Citrus flowers link with melon & peach. Lime lingers & the overall mouth-feel is sophisticated and rounded, but is so crisp and delicious it reminds us of the old world styles produced in Northern Spain
TRADITIONAL
Seifried Estate, Grüner Veltliner 2017
Delicate floral & slate aromas, soft, pear & white pepper notes. Fine textured phenolics define the long palate. Traditionally an Austrian grape, this one is made by Austrian Family in Nelson!
ATTITUDE
Kumeu River, Pinot Gris 2016
Aromas of peach & stone fruit notes tinged with a floral perfume. Rich & complex with a lively texture on the palate. Not to ever be likened to dreaded Pinot Grigio – this is the polar opposite! Elegant, pure and poised with a side of attitude to pull together!
