Sadie Family Wines

Eben Sadie, winemaker at the eponymous Sadie Family Wines, has been described as many things: South Africa’s first certified celebrity winemaker, an ‘enfant terrible’, and as ‘one of the greatest, most original winemakers in the Southern Hemisphere’. All are true. Also true is that his wines are some of the most exciting and highly sought-after in the whole of South Africa, if not the world.

Eben Sadie

Starting his winemaking career at Charles Back’s Spice Route, Eben broke out on his own in 1999, and quickly acquired a reputation as one of South Africa’s most innovative, inspired winemakers following the release of his Columella wine - the first in his now-renowned Signature Series. These are wines crafted from blends of grapes grown across South Africa’s Swartland region, which, once unfairly maligned, is now rising sharply in both quality and popularity.

Die Ouwingerdreeks wines

Eben’s goal is to produce real expressions of regions and specific sites in his wines, and his new Old Vine series (or Die Ouwingerdreeks in Afrikaans) is a project very close to his heart. Working closely with renowned viticulturalist, Rosa Kruger, he sought out, revitalised, and in some cases saved, old vineyards throughout the Cape. These highly-sought after wines are produced in limited volumes, and are truly incredible examples from a winemaker at the very top of his game.
