WINE PRODUCER
Innocent Bystander was established in the Yarra Valley in 1997 by Phil Sexton. Phil was one of the founders of Matilda Bay Brewery in Victoria and Little Creatures in Western Australia. Both of which were sold off (to Fosters and Lion, respectively).
Devil’s Lair in Margaret River
He then established Devil’s Lair in Margaret River, before selling it to the precursor to Treasury Wine Estates. As well as created his budget label Innocent Bystander. Whilst Phil’s other venture, Giant Steps, was focused on single-vineyard, higher-priced and small batch wines. Innocent Bystander was more about cheap and approachable wines that anyone can enjoy.
Innocent Bystander & Brown Brothers
In 2016, Phil sold the Innocent Bystander label to Brown Brothers, who were eager to get their hands on the incredibly successful Moscato and Prosecco. Innocent Bystander sources its fruit from vineyards scattered all over Victoria. Such as King Valley for the Prosecco, Swan Hill for the Moscato, Heathcote for the Tempranillo, and King Valley for the Pinot Gris. Winemaking duties are undertaken by a talented bunch of people from Brown Brothers, under the guidance of Chief Winemaker Joel Tilbrook.
The Innocent Bystander Wine Line-Up
The Innocent Bystander line-up includes a large number of wines in the cheap to medium-priced budget range.
NV Moscato
There is the ultra-popular NV Moscato, a rose-coloured spritzy wine with aromas of fairy floss. As well as Turkish delight and mandarin peel, which, with its low alcohol of only 5.5% and sweet palette, goes down incredibly well in summer.
NV Prosecco
The NV Prosecco is drier than its pink cousin, but is the perfect wine to be had with cheese, seafood, or ‘those fancy moments’.
Mea Culpa Syrah
The Mea Culpa Syrah is sourced from a single vineyard in the Yarra Valley, with enticing aromas and flavours of blackberry, raspberry and white pepper spice.

WINE REGION
Victoria Wine Region Australia
Boasting the title of ‘most diverse’ wine region in Australia, Victoria’s vintners know their wine. Despite being the smallest mainland state, Victoria wine regions, Australia boasts the most wine regions out of all the Australian states. It houses a plethora of individual wineries, producing some of Australia’s best Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. As well as Fortified wine, Riesling, Shiraz and Sparkling Wines.

History of the Wine Regions
In fact, back in the 1880’s Victoria was Australia’s largest wine producer. However, outbreaks of Phylloxera (aphid like insects that inject venom into the roots of grapevines) and a focus on gold saw wine production in the state grind to a halt. In the 1970s, Victoria’s wine industry enjoyed a resurgence. This was led by a new generation of talented winemakers keen to take advantage of the diverse climate and soils available in the region.
Pinot Noir Production
The world renowned Yarra Valley wine region, is located just an hour from the state’s capital, Melbourne. The region is best known for its Pinot Noir, being that it is the most planted grape and occupies over 36% of vines in the region. The Yarra Valley boasts huge variations in elevation, climate and even soil types, allowing winemakers to be able to produce single vineyard wines that are notable for being unique to their sites.
