WINE PRODUCER
The Seifried legend began in 1973 when Hermann and Agnes Seifried decided to lay down roots (literally) in Nelson New Zealand. An Austrian born, Hermann came to New Zealand to take up a job making apple wine when he met Agnes in her hometown of Nelson in 1971. Suffice to say they hit it off, married and decided they wanted to realise their own dreams of making wine - and we are so glad they did. From humble beginnings when Hermann and Agnes grafted the vines late into the night, to today when all three Seifried ‘children’ have returned home to play their part in growing the family business, Seifried Estate is a company devoted to sustainable winegrowing and producing the very best Nelson has to offer.
The Seifried portfolio is broad and varied. Nelson is a region that offers amazing diversity in the vineyards with many styles and grape varieties doing consistently very well there. Seifried offer the traditional varietals, such as their Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Unoaked Chardonnay, and a Sparkling not to be missed.
Obviously being Austrian born, there are heavy Austrian influence in their wine selection, we are thrilled you have the chance to try them. Their Gewürztraminer is beautifully scented with rose petal characters, toffee apple & candied ginger. Well proportioned with natural fruit sweetness, floral flavours & gentle spice and a generous finish on the palate. Grüner Veltliner is delicate with floral and slate aromas, soft, pear & white pepper notes. Fine texture and a long time on the palate and a house favourite the Zweigelt which boasts juicy and flavoursome with vibrant, dark cherry & boysenberry characteristics. Hints of dried herbs compliment the bright fruit notes leaving a long, succulent finish. They also boast a Würzer, a German aromatic so there is certainly plenty to choose from.

WINE REGION
Dwarfed by the dominant surrounding regions such as Marlborough, Nelson is often overlooked. But when one takes the time to explore both wine and country, Nelson is a delightful find. Acting as a gateway to the Abel Tasman and Kahurangi National park, stunning scenery, nature walks and hiking trails are something Nelson has to spare.
The unique topography of the area provides many benefits for vintners, the mountain range that envelopes the area, covering the west, south and east provides fantastic protection from the prevailing westerly winds. The result of which is a climate that is far calmer compared to the neighbouring regions that sit outside of the ranges protection. Although the ranges do cause a far higher rate of rainfall compared to Marlborough. Luckily this is countered by the increased daylight exposure resulting from the regions northern location.
Nelsons two sub-regions are Waimea Plains and the Upper Moutere hill country. The plains and Marlborough are very similar in character, although the plains gravelly silt loams have a higher clay content leading to high water retention and core minerality provoking light aromatic wines. While the gravel threaded clay of the Upper Moutere hill country produces rich, complex wines with fantastic texture.
Nelson has seen a steady increase in plantings over the previous 20 years, although suitable land is becoming scarce, not only driving up the cost of production but also limiting the future growth potential of the region.
